Observations of Differential Charging Effects on Ats 6
نویسنده
چکیده
Differential charging effects observed in the electron data of the University of California, San Diego, auroral particles experiment on Applied Technology Satellite 6 are described and analyzed. An electrostatic barrier around the environmental measurements experiment (EME) package on ATS 6 is shown to be the natural result of dielectrics around the spacecraft which are more negatively charged than the main-frame of the spacecraft. In particular, the large dish antenna on ATS 6 causes the formation of a barrier which traps particles emitted from the EME package surface and returns them to the spacecraft. The insulating surface of the rotating University of Minnesota detector on the otherwise conducting EME package is shown to be the source of accelerated fluxes of electrons during charging events.

Experiments In Charge Control at Geosynchronous Orbit - ATS-5 and ATS-6
INTRODUCTION Nonzero spacecraft potentials have been noted since the beginning of satellite flights. Large negative potentials (hundreds to thousands of volts) were first observed on Applied Technology Satellite 5 (ATS-5) in eclipse. These were explained as the natural result of a balance of the ambient electron and ion currents with associated secondary electron currents. In sunlight, photoemi...
متن کاملComparison of Spacecraft Charging Environments at the Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn
Studies of the Earth with the ATS-5, ATS-6, and SCATHA spacecraft led to the development of several simple tools for predicting the potentials to be expected on a spacecraft in the space environment. These tools have been used to estimate the expected levels of worst case charging at Jupiter and Saturn for the Galileo and the Cassini spacecraft missions. This paper reviews those results and put...
متن کاملObservations of Charging Dynamics
Plasma data from the UCSD Auroral Particles Experiments on Applied Technology Satellites 5 and 6 are used to investigate the dynamics of natural charging events. Both eclipse and daylight charging events are considered, and typical responses illustrated by data from specific events. Two different physical processes are found to be involved in the charging process. One of these is straightforwar...
متن کاملSurface Science Constraints to Regolith Models
Introduction: Much of what we know about airless bodies in the solar system comes from observation of their surface or surface processes. From observations come hypotheses or models that, in favorable cases, can be constrained by additional observations on returned samples. Here, we show that other useful constraints arise from the extant knowledge of surface science processes occurring in othe...
متن کاملModification of Spacecraft Potentials by Thermal Electron Emission on ATS-5
Electron emission experiments on Applied Technology Satellite 5 using a thermal electron emitter are reported and analyzed. Operations in eclipse charging environments showed that electron emission could partially discharge a negatively charged satellite. Typical operations resulted in kilovolt potentials being reduced to hundreds of volts for a few tens of seconds, followed by a gradual rechar...
